Live Beat Maker

A drum machine you play with other people. Share the room link and every beat you tap lands on everyone's grid at the same moment. All sound is synthesized live in the browser.

Press Play to hear the starter beat, then tap cells to change it. Open the share link in a second tab to see two players in the same room.

How it works

Each row is a synthesized drum, each column is a sixteenth note, and a playhead sweeps left to right at the tempo you set. Toggle a cell and that drum fires on that step. Everything you hear is generated on the fly with the Web Audio API, oscillators and filtered noise shaped into kicks, snares, hats and toms, so there are no samples to download and the timing stays rock solid.

Why it is real-time

The first time you open the page you get a fresh room with its own link. Anyone who opens that link joins the same room over a real-time WebSocket channel. Cell toggles, tempo changes, and play or stop are broadcast to everyone in the room as they happen, and you can see each other's live cursors moving across the grid. When a new person joins, someone already in the room hands over the current beat so they drop straight into the groove. Rooms are ephemeral, the beat lives only in the browsers that are currently connected.

Make a beat in thirty seconds

Put kicks on steps 1, 5, 9 and 13 for a steady four-on-the-floor. Add a snare or clap on 5 and 13 for the backbeat. Fill the closed hat across every other step to drive it forward, then sprinkle an open hat or a tom to taste. Hit Randomize when you want a starting point to mangle, and drag the tempo to find the pocket.

How do we make a beat together?

Click Share room to copy the link and send it to a friend. When they open it they join your room, and from then on every change either of you makes shows up for the other instantly, including live cursors. It works across phones and laptops anywhere in the world.

Are the sounds real samples?

No, every drum is synthesized live with the Web Audio API. That is why the page loads instantly with no files to fetch, and why the playback timing is tight.

Is my beat saved anywhere?

No. Rooms are ephemeral and nothing is written to a database. The beat exists only in the browsers of the people currently in the room. Bookmark the room link if you want to come back to the same room while people are still in it.

It says solo mode, what happened?

That means the real-time connection could not be established, usually a network or firewall issue. The drum machine still works perfectly on its own, you just will not see other people. Reload to try reconnecting.

Do I need an account?

No sign-up, no install, no app. Open the page and play.
