Every frame from your camera is handed to a neural segmentation model that predicts, for each pixel, how likely it is to be you versus the background. That gives a soft mask. The page then keeps your pixels, feathers the edge so it does not look cut out with scissors, and paints your chosen background behind you — a blur of your real room, a solid color, a generated scene, or an image you upload. All of this happens dozens of times a second, entirely on your machine.
The model is Google's MediaPipe Selfie Segmenter running through WebAssembly and your GPU. Because it runs locally, there is no upload, no round-trip to a server, and no privacy trade-off. It also keeps working with your internet switched off once the model has been cached.

Why run it in the browser?
Background tools usually mean installing software or piping your webcam to a cloud service. Neither is great when the thing being sent is a live video of your face and your room. Doing the segmentation on-device means the footage simply never leaves your computer. It is also instant, since there is no upload to wait on, and it is free to run because there is no server bill behind it.
Is my webcam feed uploaded anywhere?
No. The AI model and the compositing run locally in your browser through WebAssembly and your GPU. Your camera frames never touch a server, which is why it is instant and private.
Do I need a real green screen?
No. The neural network separates you from your background against any wall. A physical green screen still gives the crispest edge, but it is not required.
Can I use this as a virtual camera in Zoom or Meet?
Not directly — a web page cannot feed a virtual camera into other apps on its own. You can record a clip here and download it, or use it for browser-based recording. Zoom and Meet also have their own built-in background features.
Why does the edge look rough sometimes?
Even lighting and a bit of contrast between you and the wall help a lot. The edge smoothing slider softens the outline, and a blurred background hides imperfections far better than a hard-edged image.
Does it work on my phone?
It runs on modern mobile browsers, but the model is heavier on a phone, so the frame rate will be lower than on a laptop. A desktop browser gives the smoothest result.
