How it works
Every race is a private room with its own link. Open the page and you land in a fresh room with a code in the URL. Send that link to anyone and the moment they open it they are in your race, ready to type the exact same passage. When any player hits Start, a short countdown runs on everyone's screen at the same instant, then the passage unlocks and the typing begins. Each player's car slides along its lane as they type, so you can feel yourself pulling ahead or falling behind in real time.
How is it live without a server I have to run?
There is no game server. While you type, your browser broadcasts two small numbers on a realtime channel: how far through the passage you are and your current words-per-minute. Every other browser in the room receives those numbers and animates your lane. The passage itself rides along when the race starts, so everyone is racing identical text. Because nothing is written to a database, a room exists only while people are in it, which is exactly what you want for a quick race with friends. Your keystrokes never leave your machine as text; only your progress percentage and speed are shared.
How speed and accuracy are scored
Words per minute uses the long-standing convention of five characters per word: your correct characters divided by five, divided by the minutes elapsed since the countdown ended. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes you got right the first time, so fixing a typo still costs you on accuracy even after you correct it. The clock is the same for everyone because it starts the instant the countdown hits zero, not when you press your first key.
Good ways to use it
Drop the link in a group chat and run a best-of-three. Use it as a warm-up before a coding session, settle who buys coffee, or run a friendly bracket at a meetup. On your own it is a distraction-free typing speed test you can repeat as often as you like to push your WPM up. It works on a laptop or desktop keyboard best; on a phone it will bring up the on-screen keyboard so you can still join in.
Do I need to sign up?
No. There is no account and no install. Open the page, copy the link, and share it. Anyone who opens the link joins your race instantly.
Is anything saved or uploaded?
No. Your progress and speed are relayed live between the browsers in the room and never written to a database. When everyone closes the tab, the room is gone.
How many people can race at once?
It is built for small groups, a handful of friends or teammates racing together comfortably in real time. It is not meant for hundreds of simultaneous racers.
Can I practice by myself?
Yes. With no one else in the room it works as a solo typing speed test. Start a race, type the passage, and you get your WPM and accuracy. Share the link whenever you want to race someone.
Does it work on mobile?
You can join from a phone and the on-screen keyboard will appear, but a physical keyboard is much faster and more comfortable for a real race.
