How it works

When you drop in a HEIC photo, this tool decodes it with a WebAssembly build of libheif, the same open-source engine that reads the format, and then re-encodes it as JPG, PNG, or WebP using your browser's Canvas. All of that happens on your own machine. There is no upload, no queue, and no copy of your photo sitting on someone's server. After the page has loaded you can disconnect from the internet and it will still convert.

Why your iPhone photos are HEIC

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default because it stores the same image in roughly half the space of a JPG. The catch is that plenty of websites, job application forms, older Windows software, and other people's phones still cannot open it. Converting to JPG is the quickest way to make a photo that just works everywhere you need to send it.

Tips for the best result

For photos you are emailing or uploading to a form, JPG at quality 85 to 92 looks identical to the original at a fraction of the size. Choose PNG only when you need a lossless copy or a transparent background. If a site has a file-size limit, set a max width to bring the dimensions down before converting. Need to go the other way or handle PNG and WebP files too? The image converter in the lab covers that.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
